The plain pair ends in the round jack that most laptops and desk machines still carry, and the air tube pair ends in USB-C for the phone or thin laptop that dropped the round hole. On the air tube one the driver sits in a sealed shell down the cord and the sound travels the last stretch up a hollow tube, so what rests on the outer ear is light plastic with no tip pushed into the canal.
